Below is the original treatment written by other members of the group which I have developed to add the camera shots.
HOOK:
HOOK:
Jayden Donnelly is an 8-month year old child who
is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer named 'Botryoid Rhabdomyosarcoma'
(cancer within his bladder and prostate). His mother, Eleanor Donnelly wants to
travel to France with Jayden for his treatment, as it is not available within
the UK.
GOAL/INTENDED PURPOSE:
The intended purpose is to raise awareness on the fact that treatment for child cancer within the UK is very limited, using Jayden's story as an example. We would like to inform the audience with facts and statics that will grab their attention and shock them, for example, Within the past two decades, only 1 new method of treatment has been accepted, and we want to increase that number. If we provoke the audience’s emotions through Jayden's cancer story, we will have a bigger impact on the viewer’s ideas/thoughts.

HAS ANY MEDIA WORK ALREADY BEEN PRODUCED?
- Newspaper article
- Facebook page
With our documentary, we will create visual awareness, which takes the audience on a visual story of Jayden's life which will be more emotive and attention grabbing.

THE TEAM:
Carrie Marples, Jessica Hall, Chris Kelly,
Lauren Griggs, Laurence McWhinnie, Emily Ledger.
LENGTH/FORMAT:
5 minutes. Linear narrative, chronological but
with flashbacks.
AUDIENCE:
Primarily adults (parents) aged 18-50+ as it’s a
mature and hard-hitting story. Working class families in particular, as they
would relate more to the struggle e.g. financially. Primarily women as it
follows mother and son. We envisage the work to be seen on Channel 4 around
8:00pm+ as this channel focuses highly on documentaries such as this one e.g.
Dispatches.
Narrative Development:
Beginning: Empathetic,
emotional, shocking. This will grab the audience’s attention and instantly
bring sympathy.
Shocking facts/statistics on childhood cancer treatment and Jaydens case will help you to understand the case and the journey.
Shocking facts/statistics on childhood cancer treatment and Jaydens case will help you to understand the case and the journey.
Some facts to focus on are:
* 1:300 children are diagnosed with cancer every 3 minutes
* 60 of those children have Botryoid Rhabdomyosarcoma
* The survival rate for this cancer is just 2/3
* There is no full treatment for this cancer within the UK
This is a shock factor technique to bring in the audience and will help flow into the middle part of the story which is introducing the characters more in detail. Doing this early on will really define the journey. We will get this across by using narration and highlighting the facts by using on screen text.
Also included in the beginning:
- Interview with Eleanor Donnelly (Jayden's mother) to introduce the main people within the story. This will be done using a one on one personal interview. It will give a personal feeling and make it almost relatable.

This section includes a variety of interviews
with professionals and those close to Jayden. Again, personal interviews guided
by narration and text will smoothly transition and unfold this story. These
particular questions will help the viewers understand what the situation is and
become more informed rather than asking general questions. These are hard
hitting and to the point.
- Interviews with doctors/professionals

This middle section will be the key factor of
the awareness we are trying to get across as it really defines the situation.
By making it personal and still remaining professional it will really have a
strong emotional effect which helps make the awareness more obvious.
Ending: Persuade, create hope and tie up the story.

This will bring the story to a close and bring
the viewers together as you will now know more about this story and the highs
and lows.
This section includes:
- what the audience could do to help – by giving numbers of charities and other activities you can do at home.
* Donate, share video, raise awareness
- how it would feel to Eleanor if the treatment was to be available in her own country
- how it would change the treatment system if there were more availability for treatment within the UK

and eager to help. Again, getting the idea across will be guided by music,
narration and text.

Beginning:
Fade
in. Title sequence runs where you see shots of Liverpool monuments by using
pans and angled shots to set the location. The sequence will include some
tranquil music to guide it along. Fade to black – you will then see the title
on a plain background – “Liverpool Stories”.
Fade
in again. Narration begins to tell the story by first saying what the story is
about e.g. “ We will follow Jayden a young boy who is suffering a rare form of
cancer” After this we will get facts about the cancer which will be shown on
screen in plain simple easy to read text.
We see shots of the characters we’re following throughout and use
emotional music, especially when stating the statistics.
Cut
to scene of a hospital entrance where we begin our personal journey. Guided by
narration of Jayden’s life.
Fade
into the interview room, which is personal and tranquil. Soft colours and soft
transitions will make this feel really personal. Smooth pans and over the
shoulder shots define the interview.
End
of part 1 and fade. Tie up the section.
Middle:
Fade
in. We see the hospital again and see Jayden and his mother entering. Sequence
of the hospital corridors occurs. Short interviews with professionals begin
this scene. These are short but answer key questions you would want to know.
Use of a professional environment e.g. hospital adds seriousness. Guided by
harsher colours such as whites. Finally we go to outside the hospital where we
find out how the family is raising money. By using a sequence to uplifting
music and soft gentle colours – a happier time in a bad situation. Fade out and
tie up section.
Ending:
Fade
back in – soft music plays. A sequence of how the story has progressed guided
by narration. Narration tells us how we at home can get involved – done by text
on screen with key sites and organisations. Fade back in to personal Eleanor
interview where we see what a difference this would make back home. Emotional
music and pauses to give a reaction. Pictures of Jayden now and the entire
journey. Ends on a positive note using bright colours and happy emotion. Re cap
of key numbers, websites and thanks to the family and doctors involved. Fade
out and credits roll to upbeat music.
